EVENT INFORMATION

Thomas Axworthy, presents its February concert “When Angels Make Music”. The group will be playing many sizes of recorder, from the 9-inch Sopranino to the 8-foot-plus SubContraBass
Around the ceiling in the burial crypt of Prince Elector Moritz of Saxony (d. 1553) in the Freiberg Cathedral in Saxony are 30 angels playing gilded musical instruments. They include a variety of brass, woodwind, and string instruments providing a unique insight into 16th century instrumentation. In the 1950’s it was discovered that 21 of the instruments are real, and since then many have been replicated and played giving modern audiences a glimpse of the sounds of the Renaissance. For this concert LARO, along with tenor Steve Padilla, will be performing the mass written for the burial of Prince Elector Moritz the Missa Super Epitaphium Mauritii, as well as madrigals, and motets representing the music played at the Cathedral in the 16th century.
